Gears of War 3 is getting a public beta early next year, Epic Games revealed at an event this week at their studio. This will be the first time a Gears of War game is getting a public beta. Epic Games' Rod Fergusson told the gathered press that the team has always wanted to do a public beta, but only if they could later use that feedback to improve the title. Now that Gears of War 3's launch has been pushed back from April to the fall of 2011, the team thinks they will be able to to do just that. No word yet on when next year the multiplayer beta will be hitting. Update: I've moved those fancy two videos to their own post where I walk you through the oodles of new things you're seeing and give more details on the three new multiplayer game modes unveiled. Epic has told us that delaying Gears of War from next April to autumn 2011 was "a business decision" and not "a quality issue".
Executive producer Rod Fergusson added that the game is on track to be the most polished Gears title yet. "I know fans are going to be disappointed with the new release date, but rest assured that this is a business decision between partners, and not a quality issue," he said. "Gears 3 was on track to be the most polished Gears of War game ever when it released in April, and this additional time allows us to polish it that much more before it hits shelves next fall. "Next week we have a major multiplayer press visit at Epic HQ, and I'm really looking forward to the fans getting to see and hear about Gears 3 Versus multiplayer for the first time. Lots more exciting news to come." Earlier today Gears of War 3 was delayed by a minimum of five months. Explaining the shock move, Microsoft said that it wants the game to be "the marquee title for the holiday season", adding that "Gears of War 3 promises to be the biggest entertainment launch of 2011." It looks like Epic's Cliff Bleszinski was more than just three days off when he told Jimmy Fallon on national TV that Gears of War 3 was hitting on April 8. The next day Microsoft shifted the date a bit, saying the game would actually be hitting on April 5, 2011. Today the publisher is shifting Gears 3 a bit more... to the fall of 2011. And they say the, let's just call it a delay, has nothing to do with development time and everything to do with marketing. "Gears of War 3 promises to be the biggest entertainment launch of 2011," the Microsoft statement reads. "The teams at Microsoft Game Studios and Epic Games have done great work thus far readying the title for release in the Spring of 2011. However, we've elected to move the launch of Gears of War 3 until Fall 2011 to make it the marquee title for the holiday season." Fair enough. But why would they decide now, just a week or so into fall 2010, to push such a huge title back five or so months? Microsoft declined to say, so let's speculate.
If it is indeed purely about marketing, there are a couple of things that could be at play here. Epic's other big game, Bulletstorm, is set to knock us off our feet on Feb. 22, 2011. Maybe they wanted to give that a bit more breathing room. And what about the other huge Xbox 360 shooter exclusive, Halo? Maybe this oddly timed redeployment of Gears of War 3 was somehow spurred by the inner machinations of that still untitled, undated, relatively unknown Halo game by 343 Industries. |
